Established by the Mayfield Lions in 2006, the Mt. Somers Mountain Bike Race is a sports event for all ages and abilities, created to raise funds for worthy causes.
The race winds its way through the historic Mt. Somers Station, home to the Acland family. Journey through this rugged, captivating landscape, weaving around grassland and tussock, shady forests and the flourishing native bush. Just an hour’s drive from both Christchurch and Timaru, the picturesque setting makes for a great day out, with competitors, supporters, and general onlookers coming from far and wide to enjoy the festivities.
The events cater for a range of mountain bike courses for all levels and competitiveness, making it a day the whole family can enjoy.
The 3 races include the Hokonui Mountain Challenge course, with steep ascents and descents aimed at the experienced, competitive rider, the RDR Foothills MTB race, designed for those still after a good workout and Big Al’s Lowland MTB race, designed for the rider looking for a nice easy ride.
Carrying on from 2019 we continue with the walk, now called the Staverly Store Cafe Walk.
An added bonus to the day includes a meal at the conclusion of the races, included in the entry fee. This is a great chance to enjoy a laugh with fellow competitors, and there are always plenty of tall tales and amusing anecdotes shared. The event was created purely and simply to raise money for community causes. A recipient of this year’s proceeds includes Ronald McDonald House, as well as a host of local organisations, ensuring the entire community benefits from this fantastic event.
The event for 2021 will take place on the 20th February.
